La belleza de las verdes praderas de Suiza, su ganado de leche de fama mundial, su arquitectura rural, un pequeño tren, una capilla y hasta el único restaurante giratorio de Centroamérica han sido magistralmente recreados, a lo largo de 30 años de servicio, en el hotel de montaña Los Héroes, asentado a orillas del Lago Arenal en Tilarán, y cuya obra corresponde a Franz Ulrich Stoeckli (qDg) de nacionalidad suiza, que llego a CR a trabajar en comercialización de café y años más tarde compro una finca en la que instalo una lechería con la arquitectura del establo de sus abuelos.
La admiración de ticos y extranjeros por la arquitectura del establo fue tan determinante, que lo motivo a incursionar en Turismo, por lo que en el año 1.991 inicia la construcción de un pequeño Hotel poniendo a disposición de los visitantes alojamiento y alimentación, con un restaurante con comida internacional con énfasis en platillos típicos de su país natal.
El nombre del Hotel
En representación de la mezcla de 2 culturas, la tica de doña Silena su esposa y la suiza de don Franz, fue la motivación para que el artista alajuelense José Monge, dejara plasmadas las pinturas de Juan Santamaría y la de Arnold Von Winkelried en el edificio principal, representando así el nombre del Hotel Los Héroes.
La Capilla
Complemento del hotel, se construyó en el año 1.997, la bella capilla dedicada a San Judas Tadeo y Santa Teresa, como agradecimiento a Dios, por el milagro de la vida en un grave accidente sufrido por la familia. La belleza de los frescos plasmados en su interior sobre el viejo y nuevo testamento, han motivado a diversos tipos de celebraciones, como bautizos, aniversarios y un centenar de bodas.
El tren
Con el paso del tiempo, el emprendedor y visionario don Franz, aceptó comprarle a un coterráneo varios vagones de pasajeros, 3 locomotoras y 3 kms. de línea férrea para ofrecer un trayecto entre el hotel y la cima de la montaña, donde se puede disfrutar de una vista panorámica de 360 grados: un bosque primario, el impresionante Volcán Arenal, parte de las montañas de la Cordillera de Tilarán, gran extensión del Lago Arenal, las Eólicas y una partecita del Volcán Tenorio. La belleza natural que se aprecia en todo su alrededor y sin duda la similitud de ese punto panorámico con su ciudad de origen Hergiswil, en Lucerna, lo inspiraron para construir un restaurante giratorio que diera la oportunidad a los visitantes de disfrutar de esta hermosa región de nuestro país.
Misión
Los Héroes no se limitó solamente a la búsqueda de consolidar con éxito su proyecto familiar, sino también a liderar una serie de esfuerzos para llevar desarrollo a las comunidades aledañas, lo cual estuvo representado en una lucha por impulsar el asfaltado de las vías de comunicación y mejorar y ampliar la red telefónica que brinda servicio a los habitantes de esta pujante zona. Otra meta alcanzada fue la señalización en carretera de los comercios establecidos, con miras a orientar a los visitantes.
Solamente el proyecto de la Ciclovia, que se visualizó, entre la Represa del Arenal y el pueblo de Tilarán, no se logró concretar pese al apoyo de algunas empresas de la región y algunos entes gubernamentales. Así como tampoco se ha concretado la instalación de fibra óptica para ofrecer calidad de internet a los habitantes de los caseríos en los alrededores y por ende a cada uno de los emprendimientos que giran alrededor del turismo.
Además, es de gran satisfacción haber contribuido a que muchos de los habitantes de esta región se identificaran con nuestro esfuerzo empresarial y mayor orgullo es saber que muchos de ellos, con el transcurso de los años, han logrado hacer sus propios emprendimientos alcanzando grandes metas y éxitos.
La pandemia, sin duda alguna ha representado una gran lección de vida para cada uno de nosotros en Los Héroes y nos ha tomado bastante tiempo para diseñar una nueva propuesta de nuestros servicios.

A Piece of Switzerland Recreated in Nuevo Arenal… Los Héroes Hotel – 30 Years of Service
The beauty of Switzerland’s green meadows, its world-famous dairy cattle, rural architecture, a small train, a chapel, and even Central America’s only revolving restaurant have been masterfully recreated over 30 years of service at Hotel Los Héroes, located on the shores of Lake Arenal in Tilarán. This remarkable endeavor is the work of Franz Ulrich Stoeckli (R.I.P), a Swiss national who arrived in Costa Rica to work in coffee marketing and years later purchased a farm, where he installed a dairy farm with a stable architecture reminiscent of his grandparents’ barn.
The admiration from Costa Ricans and foreigners for the barn’s architecture was so profound that it motivated him to venture into tourism. Thus, in 1991, he began the construction of a small hotel, offering visitors accommodation and meals, including a restaurant featuring international cuisine with an emphasis on dishes from his homeland.
The Name of the Hotel
Representing the blend of two cultures – the Costa Rican heritage of his wife, Silena, and the Swiss heritage of Franz – was the inspiration for Alajuelan artist José Monge to depict the paintings of Juan Santamaría and Arnold Von Winkelried on the main building, embodying the name of the hotel, «Los Héroes.»
The Chapel
As a complement to the hotel, a beautiful chapel dedicated to Saint Jude Thaddeus and Saint Teresa was constructed in 1997. This chapel stands as a token of gratitude to God for the miracle of life following a serious accident suffered by the family. The stunning frescoes within, portraying the Old and New Testaments, have set the stage for various celebrations, including baptisms, anniversaries, and a hundred weddings.
The Train
Over time, the enterprising and visionary Franz agreed to purchase several passenger cars, three locomotives, and three kilometers of railway from a fellow Swiss compatriot. This decision led to a train route from the hotel to the mountaintop, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view. This includes a primary forest, the awe-inspiring Arenal Volcano, parts of the Tilarán Mountain Range, a vast expanse of Lake Arenal, the wind turbines, and a glimpse of the Tenorio Volcano. The natural beauty that envelops this panorama, coupled with the similarity to his hometown of Hergiswil in Lucerne, inspired him to build a revolving restaurant, allowing visitors to savor the captivating region of our country.
Mission
Los Héroes not only aimed to successfully realize their family project but also to lead a series of efforts to bring development to the surrounding communities. This was manifested in the push for road paving and the improvement and expansion of the telephone network that serves the thriving region. The project to create a bike path, visualized between the Arenal Dam and the town of Tilarán, unfortunately did not come to fruition despite regional company support and government entities. Similarly, the installation of fiber-optic internet to provide quality connectivity to the neighboring hamlets and thereby benefit the tourism-related enterprises remains unrealized.
It is profoundly satisfying to have contributed to the identification of many locals with our entrepreneurial effort. It’s an even greater source of pride to know that many of them, over the years, have embarked on their own endeavors, achieving significant milestones and successes.
Undoubtedly, the pandemic has taught each of us at Los Héroes valuable life lessons and has taken us quite some time to design a new proposal for our services.
