Playa Conchal Raises the Blue Flag for Its Environmental Management
Playa Conchal raised the Ecological Blue Flag last Friday, September 25, in recognition of the work carried out to conserve this coastal ecosystem and maintain the standards established by the Ecological Blue Flag Program in the Beaches category.
The Ecological Blue Flag Program is an initiative that promotes the participation of public institutions, private organizations, and communities in environmental protection efforts. In the Beaches category, it establishes criteria to evaluate the management of these areas and recognizes the work of local committees that achieve and maintain its standards.
In the most recent evaluation, Playa Conchal received four white stars, one gold star, one silver star, one green star, and one orange star. The white stars reflect the level of compliance with the criteria established for the Beaches category, while the special recognitions distinguish efforts in different areas of environmental management.
The gold star recognizes actions to identify and address land-based sources of pollution affecting the beach and its surroundings. The silver star recognizes initiatives related to beach cleanups and the recovery of recyclable waste. The green star recognizes the promotion of the Sustainable Homes Program, while the orange star distinguishes awareness-raising efforts related to animal welfare.
Reserva Conchal participated in this work alongside the teams from The Westin Reserva Conchal and W Costa Rica through conservation initiatives, environmental education, and responsible waste management. These efforts include beach and river cleanups, reforestation, the Ecolecta Program, an environmental initiative focused on responsible waste management, and training on environmental issues.
“This recognition reflects the ongoing work of many people who have embraced the conservation of Playa Conchal as a shared responsibility. For Reserva Conchal, protecting this ecosystem means maintaining concrete actions, strengthening environmental education, and joining forces with those who share this commitment,” said Gabriela Meza, Sustainability Manager at Reserva Conchal.
The ceremony was attended by team members from Reserva Conchal, The Westin Reserva Conchal, and W Costa Rica, as well as representatives of the Local Ecological Blue Flag Committee. During the event, the contributions of the teams working to conserve Playa Conchal and maintain the program’s standards were recognized.
For Reserva Conchal, this recognition reinforces the importance of maintaining long-term environmental management, with actions that contribute to the protection of Playa Conchal, environmental education, and the well-being of the surrounding environment.
