New Bridge Over the Caño Negro River to Boost Tourism and Development in the Northern Region
The community of El Castillo will finally see the realization of an infrastructure project that has been awaited for more than 50 years: the construction of a Bailey bridge over the Caño Negro River. This river, known for its strong current, has posed an unresolved challenge for decades, despite efforts by various stakeholders to provide a solution.
The project is the result of an agreement between the El Castillo Development Association and CONAVI, which has enabled the purchase of materials and the hiring of the company Procon S.A., recognized for its extensive experience in constructing this type of bridge.
Bridge Features
- Two Bailey bridges will be installed with a central pier.
- The structure will have a total length of 112 meters.
- The project will include two abutments and a central pier to ensure its stability and durability.
Benefits for the Region
This bridge will not only improve access for local communities but also boost tourism and economic development. It will enhance connectivity between key destinations such as Arenal, Monteverde, El Castillo, Fortuna, Tronadora, and Tilarán, facilitating transit to the Central Pacific, Guanacaste, and the Northern Zone.
Currently, the lack of road infrastructure limits mobility, creating challenges for both residents and tourists. With the bridge’s construction, travel times will be reduced, and connectivity between communities with unparalleled natural and scenic wealth will be strengthened.
The project has been made possible thanks to strong support from the Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), the Municipality of San Carlos, the Arenal Lake Bypass Committee, and CANATUR. Additionally, tourism chambers and development associations from Monteverde, El Castillo, Tilarán, Tronadora, and La Fortuna are backing this initiative. Committed to the communities, CONAVI has provided the structures and will offer technical assistance to ensure the proper execution of the project.
At CANATUR, we firmly believe that high-quality infrastructure, especially in the road sector, is key to enhancing the experience of both national and international tourists and fostering the development of our communities. Therefore, we want to recognize and highlight the joint efforts of the El Castillo Development Association, in alliance with other local chambers and associations, CONAVI, and the local government. After 50 years of waiting, they have made the construction of a major project over the Caño Negro River possible.
This project goes beyond its value as infrastructure, as its impact on regional connectivity is fundamental for strengthening access to extraordinary tourist destinations. With this project, a new phase of development and growth begins for the area, proving that major transformations in Costa Rica are possible when there is willingness, teamwork, and effective public-private partnerships.
At CANATUR, we not only applaud this effort but also reaffirm our commitment to initiatives like this one, which promote sustainable tourism, local development, and improvements in the quality of life for communities.
A Bridge That Will Transform Connectivity and Tourism Development
The El Castillo Tourism Chamber believes that the construction of the Bailey bridge over the Caño Negro River will mark a turning point in connectivity between the region’s main tourist destinations and emerging destinations such as El Castillo. Travelers coming from the Central Pacific will be able to move more easily towards Monteverde and, from there, quickly reach La Fortuna. Likewise, those in La Fortuna will be able to travel to Monteverde in less time, allowing tourists to explore both destinations without the journey being an obstacle.
With the new infrastructure, visitors will be able to travel more efficiently through the area, facilitating longer stays in each destination and optimizing their travel experience. Additionally, those traveling from La Fortuna to Guanacaste or Tilarán will find a faster and more accessible route.
Benefits for Multiple Communities
This bridge will not only benefit tourism but will also transform the lives of many communities that currently lack adequate access. Tilarán, Tronadora, and the highlands of Tilarán, among others, will be better integrated into economic and tourism activities, generating new employment and development opportunities.
Moreover, a large area around Lake Arenal remains underdeveloped due to a lack of proper road infrastructure. With the bridge’s construction, this area will finally be activated, attracting national and foreign investment, economic revitalization, increased tax revenue, and new opportunities for local entrepreneurs. This will allow the lake to continue developing, not only for its natural beauty and appeal but also due to the access this new infrastructure will provide to the region.
This project will also strengthen two of Costa Rica’s main tourist destinations: Monteverde and La Fortuna. Improving their interconnectivity will increase visitor flow, encourage tourism sector growth, and enhance the country’s competitiveness on an international scale.
