Solar Lighting Systems to Be Installed in Playa Sámara
Public-Private Partnership Between Tourism Chamber, ICE, and Private Company
The nighttime aesthetics and public safety of Playa Sámara are set to significantly improve thanks to a solar LED lighting project to be implemented at two strategic locations in this popular tourist destination in the Nicoya canton, Guanacaste.
On May 2, a total of 16 solar-powered lamps will be installed as part of a project developed by the Playa Sámara Tourism Chamber (CTPS) in partnership with LED Verde Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).
This alliance will enable the installation of eight lamps at the Cangrejal pier and another eight at a nearby pier located just 100 meters from the central sports plaza in Sámara.
Funding for the purchase of the equipment from LED Verde Costa Rica came from profits generated by the CTPS during the organization of the Playa Sámara Civic Festivities held this past January.
Massimo Gambari, President of the CTPS, highlighted that this initiative will offer a “much more beautiful landscape environment for both domestic and international visitors.”
“The Chamber decided to place these lamps in those areas because over the years we’ve observed that these are places where people like to walk and stroll in the evenings. From now on, they’ll be able to do so under much better conditions,” Gambari said.
He emphasized that the project is a clear example of how proceeds from events such as the local festivities can directly benefit tourism—Sámara’s main source of employment.
“We organized the most recent Playa Sámara festivities under a new social model, ensuring that the profits would be reinvested in the community itself. This didn’t happen before. With this step, we’re not only making history, but we’re also showing the value of the new model we’ve implemented,” Gambari added.
Technical Support
The solar systems provided by LED Verde Costa Rica offer a versatile solution as they do not rely on the conventional power grid and can therefore be installed virtually anywhere.
Merlin Salas, Project Director at the company, noted that since 2019 they have implemented similar initiatives in other cantons in Guanacaste such as Liberia, Tilarán, and La Cruz, as well as in other parts of the country.
“This is next-generation technology. Plus, by using solar energy, it is environmentally sustainable because it causes no pollution whatsoever and has no operating cost in terms of energy consumption,” said Salas.
According to Alibaba, the global LED lighting market reached USD $814.8 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% from 2025 to 2030.
Meanwhile, the latest LED industry report by TrendForce estimates the global LED market will be valued at USD $130 billion in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 3%.
In the case of Playa Sámara, the lighting will be installed by ICE, which will dispatch a team of workers to the coastal community.
