British Airways Confirms Increased Flight Frequencies Starting in October

British Airways confirmed this morning that its direct flight to Costa Rica will operate year-round throughout 2027. According to the British airline, frequencies will increase to five flights per week from October 2026 through March 2027, and three flights per week from April through September 2027.

As a result, the route will no longer operate only seasonally and will become part of the airline’s regular schedule.

Adding to this historic announcement, which will significantly increase connectivity and seat capacity to Europe, British Airways has also decided to move the route from Gatwick Airport to Heathrow Airport, considered its main operating hub in London.

The airport change will facilitate access to more than 130 destinations served by the airline with direct flights and will also improve its capacity to transport air cargo to and from destinations across Europe. This increase in connectivity with the United Kingdom and continental Europe is the result of extensive negotiations spanning more than a year between the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), Aeris, and the airline.

“After concluding our negotiations with British Airways to increase frequencies and move the flight to Heathrow Airport, we successfully completed the final part of the negotiations, which specifically involved securing year-round service from the United Kingdom. This announcement will represent a significant increase in seats and flight frequencies from London,” said Marcos V. Borges, Executive President of the ICT.

“British Airways’ year-round service is the result of coordinated efforts between AERIS, the Costa Rican Tourism Board, and the airline to continue strengthening Costa Rica’s connectivity with strategic markets. This expansion allows us to consolidate the direct connection with the United Kingdom and strengthen connectivity opportunities with Europe. At AERIS, we will continue working together to expand travel options from Juan Santamaría International Airport and contribute to the growth and strengthening of tourism in Costa Rica through greater air connectivity,” said Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS.

British Airways detailed that during the winter schedule, the nonstop flight will depart London at 11:10 a.m. and arrive in Costa Rica at 4:40 p.m. The return flight will depart at 6:40 p.m. and land at Heathrow the following day at 10:50 a.m.

The aircraft selected to operate the route year-round, starting in October 2026, will be a Boeing 787-800. The aircraft has 204 seats, distributed across 31 Club (Business Class) seats, 37 World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) seats, and 136 World Traveller (Economy Class) seats.

According to the ICT’s latest data, the United Kingdom ranks as the third-largest source market for tourists from Europe. Between January and August, a total of 47,753 British tourists arrived by air.

Meanwhile, Europe recorded growth of 8.8% compared with the same period of the previous year, with a total of 319,552 travelers arriving from Europe.
