- Cámara de Turismo de la Zona Azul de Costa Rica
Un contrato de colaboración firmado este 6 de setiembre por el señor Marco Carmona , presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de Nicoya; la señora Marilyn Esquivel en representación -apoderada- de la Cámara de Turismo de Nosara y el señor Xavier Palomar, presidente de la Cámara de Turismo de Sámara; con el apoyo de la Municipalidad del cantón, el Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) y el aeropuerto de Liberia fue la base para crear la Cámara de Turismo de la Zona Azul de Costa Rica, como nombre de fantasía, entidad que impulsará el desarrollo del turismo en esta región del cantón Nicoya.
El Sr, Xavier Palomar, presidente de la Cámara de Turismo de Sámara comentó “Somos un destino turístico que integra a Sámara, Nosara, Puerto Carrillo, Punta Islita, Puerto Humo y San Vicente de Nicoya, Pozo de Agua y Tempisque, que podríamos calificar de irrelevantes individualmente, de ahí la necesidad de unirnos para ser más atractivos para el visitante nacional o extrajeron”.
Añadió “Si los extranjeros llegan al país para permanece 14 días en promedio, debemos competir con destinos consolidados como Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, el Caribe, Golfo Papagayo y no conformarnos con recibir solo migajas del queque, en el caso de que nos visiten por espacio de dos o tres días.
Es por ello que Palomar estima muy importante que los empresarios turísticos dejaran de lado los intereses personales y los localismos y entendieran que mediante la unión de todos es que podemos consolidar un destino turístico con diferentes paquetes que sean más deseables para el turista.
“La unión es lo mejor, porque un día ganaría un empresario de Sámara y al día siguiente otro de Nosara, por ejemplo; al mantener al turista interesado en conocer diferentes caras de un mismo destino” señaló con entusiasmo.
Zona Azul
Palomar indicó que el área de la Zona Azul primitiva de Costa Rica, del siglo anterior, donde habitan personas que superan el siglo de edad y presentan condiciones de salud admirables se ha reducido en la actualidad a los territorios situados al oeste de Nandayure, el oeste de Hojancha, el suroeste de Santa Cruz y una parte más amplia en Nicoya.
En estas comunidades se encuentran las personas que conforman la Zona Azul de Costa Rica, de ahí que es válido el argumento legítimo de los empresarios en agruparnos bajo una organización denominada Cámara de Turismo de la Zona Azul de Costa Rica, para englobar los destinos indicados anteriormente, sin demérito de que si otros quieran unirse lo puedan hacer con toda libertad.
La Zona Azul de Costa Rica ofrecer atractivos tales como tours por el río tempisque, las cavernas Barra Honda, Pozo de agua con su riqueza paisajística, la cerámica chorotega en San Vicente como manifestaciones de cultura y folclore, combinado con el disfrute de playas, montañas, cascadas, observación de aves y animales todo en un territorio de cien kilómetros cuadrados.
Xavier Palomar también insistió en la necesidad de que el ICT establezca una Oficina Cantonal de Turismo en Nicoya, como medio para atraer turismo hacia este cantón, lo que de paso contribuiría al desarrollo de los pobladores, o bien motivar a las Asociaciones de Desarrollo Integral a promover el turismo en sus zonas de influencia, como lo han hecho con mucho éxito las ADI de Tamarindo de Santa Cruz o la Fortuna de Alajuela.

El Presidente de la Cámara de Turismo de Sámara estima que si se mantiene el crecimiento socio económico de la península de Nicoya y el aumento del número de visitantes se producirá un problema de sobresaturación de gestión de residuos e infraestructura hídrica, por lo que es fundamental crear un estilo de vida para responder a la actualización del plan regulador y su efecto en la playa. Así como trabajar en pro de establecer pequeños negocios en vez de grandes concesiones a fin de crear empleo y dinamización de la economía.
Attractive Proposal for Developing Tourism on the Nicoya Coast
- Costa Rica’s Blue Zone Tourism Chamber
On September 6th, a collaborative agreement was signed by Mr. Marco Carmona, President of the Nicoya Chamber of Commerce; Ms. Marilyn Esquivel, representing the Nosara Tourism Chamber as its attorney; and Mr. Xavier Palomar, President of the Samara Tourism Chamber. This agreement, with the support of the Nicoya Municipality, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), and Liberia Airport, served as the foundation for creating the Costa Rica Blue Zone Tourism Chamber, a fictitious entity that will drive tourism development in this region of the Nicoya canton.
Mr. Xavier Palomar, President of the Samara Tourism Chamber, commented, «We are a tourist destination that encompasses Samara, Nosara, Puerto Carrillo, Punta Islita, Puerto Humo, San Vicente de Nicoya, Pozo de Agua, and Tempisque. Individually, these areas might be considered irrelevant. Hence, the need for us to unite to become more attractive to both domestic and international visitors.»
He added, «If foreigners visit the country for an average of 14 days, we must compete with well-established destinations like Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, the Caribbean, Gulf of Papagayo, and not settle for mere crumbs if they visit us for two or three days. Therefore, Palomar believes it’s crucial for tourism entrepreneurs to set aside personal interests and localism and understand that through collective efforts, we can consolidate a tourist destination with various packages that are more appealing to tourists.»
«Unity is our strength, as one day, a Samara entrepreneur might prosper, and the next day, one from Nosara, for example. By keeping tourists interested in experiencing different facets of the same destination,» he enthusiastically pointed out.
The Blue Zone
Palomar noted that the area of the original Blue Zone of Costa Rica, from the previous century, inhabited by individuals who live to be over a century old and exhibit remarkable health conditions, has now been reduced to territories west of Nandayure, west of Hojancha, southwest of Santa Cruz, and a more extensive part in Nicoya.
In these communities reside the individuals who make up the Blue Zone of Costa Rica. Hence, it is valid for entrepreneurs to join together under an organization called the Costa Rica Blue Zone Tourism Chamber to encompass the aforementioned destinations, without prejudice to the fact that others are welcome to join freely.
Costa Rica’s Blue Zone offers attractions such as tours along the Tempisque River, Barra Honda caves, Pozo de Agua with its scenic beauty, Chorotega ceramics in San Vicente as expressions of culture and folklore, combined with the enjoyment of beaches, mountains, waterfalls, bird and animal watching, all within an area of one hundred square kilometers.
Xavier Palomar also stressed the need for the ICT to establish a Cantonal Tourism Office in Nicoya as a means to attract tourism to this part of the canton, which would, in turn, contribute to the development of the local residents. Alternatively, it could motivate Integrated Development Associations (ADIs) to promote tourism in their areas of influence, as has been done very successfully by the ADIs of Tamarindo in Santa Cruz or La Fortuna in Alajuela.
Hope for the Future
The President of the Samara Tourism Chamber believes that if the socio-economic growth of the Nicoya Peninsula continues and the number of visitors increases, there will be a challenge of oversaturation in waste management and water infrastructure. Therefore, it is essential to create a lifestyle that responds to the updating of the regulatory plan and its impact on the beach. Additionally, working towards establishing small businesses instead of large concessions is vital to creating employment and stimulating the economy.
